Colour psychology in Interior Design
Colour is one of the most powerful tools available to an interior designer. It can influence how a person feels, behaves and experiences a space.
Warm Colours
Red, orange and yellow
They can create feelings of:
Energy
Warmth
Comfort
Activity
Warm colours can work beautifully in living rooms, dining areas and social spaces.
Cool Colours
Blue, green and some cool shades of purple
They can create feelings of:
Calmness
Freshness
Relaxation
Spaciousness
They are suitable for bedrooms, study rooms and relaxation areas.
Neutral Colours
White, beige, cream, grey and earthy tones
They provide:
Balance
Flexibility
Timelessness
Versatility
Neutral colours can be used as a base and combined with accent colours, textures and materials.
Colour + Light + Material + Furniture
A colour does not look the same in every space.
Natural light, artificial lighting, materials, furniture and surrounding colours can change how a colour appears.
For example, a beige wall may look warm under yellow lighting but appear cooler under natural daylight.
Designer Tip
Always test your selected colour inside the actual space before finalising the colour scheme.
